WORLD DIABETES DAY

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on 14 November. It was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the alarming rise in diabetes around the world. In 2007, the UN declared the day an official United Nations World Health Day.

14 November was chosen because it marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to their discovery of insulin in 1922. NURSES MAKE THE DIFFERENCE FOR DIABETES is the World Diabetes Day theme for 2020.

The World Diabetes Day logo is a blue circle which symbolises life and health. The colour blue reflects the sky that unites all nations and is the colour of the United Nations flag. The circle also signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes pandemic.
