Prevention of high blood pressure

Hypertension can be prevented by following a healthy lifestyle

  • Reduce salt intake to less than 5g daily
  • Eat more fruit and vegetables
  • Limit the intake of foods high in saturated fats
  • Eliminate/reduce trans fats in the diet
  • Exercise for at least 150 minutes each week (about 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week)
  • Avoid the use of tobacco
  • Reduce alcohol consumption (no more than 2 drinks per day)
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Reduce and manage stress
